antiseptic (noun) a substance that checks infection in injuries and wounds by killing the bacteria in them.

An antiseptic is a substance which keeps wounds free from bacteria by killing them. Antiseptic lotions, ointments, and antibiotics which are deadly to bacteria save human beings from harmful and even fatal effects. Sepsis, the poisoning of wounds by bacteria, if not checked in time by antiseptics, may lead to the amputation of the affected part and even cause death.

  • Millions of lives have been saved because of the discovery of the use and effects of antiseptics which are capable of destroying harmful bacteria.
  • Before the antiseptics were developed, wounded people died more because of infection than because of the wounds, which, in some cases were minor. This happened to the soldiers wounded in the Crimean War.
