anvil (noun) a huge and heavy iron block on which hot metal pieces are beaten to shape.

Red hot iron pieces or those of any other metal are placed on a huge block of iron, and are beaten into the required shape. This block of iron is called an anvil. The anvil is the chief item of equipment of a blacksmith. The anvil is to the blacksmith what the drawing board is to a design engineer.

  • After heating one end of the iron rod in the furnace, the blacksmith put it on the anvil, and beat the red hot end into a sharp point.
  • A blacksmith without an anvil is like a soldier without a gun in the front ranks of an army.
