aperture (noun) a small hole or opening in something; an opening in a camera to allow light to reach the lens.

A small hole or opening in a wall, roof, etc., is an aperture. The opening or the hole may either be due to a defect in the structure, or because of some damage. A dark place which has a small hole somewhere in it has an aperture. People hiding in such a place can peep through the aperture. A camera has an aperture, that is, a small opening to allow light to reach the lens.

  • As they walked into the cave, they noticed an aperture in the roof through which a pencil of sunlight passed into the cave.
  • As the camera is clicked, the aperture opens, exposing the flim inside to light for a second.
