aphorism (noun) a short phase, clause, or sentence expressing something true or wisdom; an adage.

An aphorism is a brief wise saying containing a lot of truth. It is something like a proverb, but more philosophical and a little abstract. Examples of aphorisms are, 'pride goes before fall,' and 'a little wisdom is dangerous.'

  • His speech was full of aphorisms, some used to good effect, and some not so relevant.
  • His apt quoting of aphorisms lends his writings a moral force that impresses his readers.
