apothecary (noun) (in the past) a maker and seller of medicines; a druggist or a pharmacist.

In the past those who made and sold medicines, a pharmacist or a druggist with or without the qualification or training in it, were apothecaries.

  • Apothecaries were mostly quacks who had only a limited knowledge of medicines and treatment.
  • People in the past were dependent on apothecaries though they had no knowledge of medicine or of the efficacy of the drugs they sold.
