appall (verb) to shock and sicken.

When something appalls us, it shocks us because of its unexpected severity. Senseless killing of innocent people, brutal crimes, and mindless violence appalls us; that is, we are shocked at them. We are appalled at an idea, when we turn away from it as it is totally against what we think is right. The idea of living in a small room amidst dirty surroundings may appall us.

  • The miserable conditions in which children in some of the countries, even in this century, are forced to work for long hours to earn a living, appalls us.
  • We are appalled by the neglect of the destitute children and infants, in some of the orphanages and the so called child welfare homes.
