appease (verb) pacify; make someone less angry by giving them what they want.

To appease someone is to make them favorable to us by giving them what they demand. Satisfying a person by agreeing to give what they ask for, to avoid a fight, etc., is appeasing a person. We appease a child by giving it the toy it wants. To make a person to be at peace with us, we appease them.

  • The government tried to appease the minorities by reserving a certain percentage of jobs in government services and by granting them certain scholarships in educational institutions.
  • The country appeased its aggressive and more powerful neighbor by agreeing to give it a part of its own territory.
