A name other than their own, given to a person, or a title conferred on them, is an appellation. An appellation is usually given to a person in connection with their position or, more often, for what they are famous for.
- Prince Gautama, founder of Buddhism, after his enlightenment was known with the appellation, 'The Buddha,' which means the enlightened one.
- Abraham Lincoln, along with Gandhi of India, is often referred to with the appellation, 'The apostles of peace and nonviolence.' Gandhi, in addition, had the appellation, Mahatma, which means the great soul.
