appropriate (verb) acquire wrongfully; take something of others without their permission for one's own use.

A person appropriates others' property if they take the others' property without their permission, that is, illegally. If someone occupies a piece of land belonging to others, the occupier appropriates it. Appropriation is illegal and so is a crime. A person who borrows others' ideals and claims them to be their own appropriates them.
