A person chosen, or accepted by the parties to a dispute to settle the dispute is an arbiter. An arbiter is usually a person with the power and influence to make peace between two quarreling people, or groups of people. An arbiter of art is a person capable of judging the beauty of art. We also have arbiters of fashion of style, fashion, etc..

  • An arbiter, to be effective and successful, should enjoy the confidence and trust of all the parties to a dispute.
  • An arbiter should create in the parties concerned the impression that they (the arbiter) have a reputation for impartiality.
