archipelago (noun) a group of small islands close to one another and the sea surrounding them.

An archipelago is a geographical feature. A large group of small islands, very close to one another, and the sea surrounding it, are an archipelago. An example of an archipelago is the Malayan Archipelago, which includes Malaysia and Indonesia.

  • The organization and management of surface transport poses a problem in an archipelago, as a number of bridges are required to connect the islands to one another.
  • The climate in a tropical archipelago as in Indonesia is usually very humid because of the closeness of the sea.
