archives (noun) a large collection of records of history, of a family, an organization, or a place; a place where these records are kept.

Historical records, records of families, government documents, records of an organization, etc., are archives. These archives are of great use to establish precedents (past examples of present happenings), for research, etc.. Historians find them extremely valuable. Family archives are a record of family events, possessions, history, etc.. So is it with the archives of an organization, or of a place. A place where such records are kept is an archive.

  • An examination of the archives relating to the twentieth century will show that the US supported the Indian struggle for freedom from the British rule.
  • While studying the family archives, Smith was surprised to discover that one of his ancestors had close connections with the rulers of Austria.
