argot (noun) slang.

Argot or slang, especially argot, is language special to a group, and understood only by that group. Most of the words of argot are short-lived. The students' argot, or their slang, is special to students, and cannot be understood by others. So is it with teenagers' argot or the criminals' argot. Such words or language do not form a part of standard speech and writing.

  • Bobby, cop, and peeler are argot for a police constable, poke for an injection, and pill shooter for a doctor.
  • Argot is certainly below the level of standard speech or writing, but, among those who are a group, argot indicates closeness and friendship.
