aristocracy (noun) the members of the highest class with a lot of inherited property and wealth in a society; a government by a minority, privileged, because of their wealth and prosperity.

Aristocracy is the word by which the class of very wealthy people inheriting a lot of property is known, especially in Europe, in the olden days. People known by the titles, earls, dukes, counts and lords, are all aristocrats. They are lords of big estate, and in the olden days enjoyed a lot of power over peasants working on their estate, and they often repressed them. A government run by a wealthy minority is also called aristocracy.

  • In the Middle Ages, members of the aristocracy had absolutely no regard for the lives of the peasants under their control, and often harassed them.
  • The French Revolution of 1789 was the result of the cruel and inhuman treatment of the commoners by the aristocracy.
