armada (noun) a large group of ships, especially of war ships; a large group of any thing.

A large group of war ships, especially those participating in an attack, is called an armada. Spain, for example, in the sixteenth century sent such an armada to attack England. Armada also refers sometimes to a large group of any thing. When we say an armada of tourists, we mean a large number of tourists.

  • An armada sailing in battle formation was quite impressive to look at, but it also gave a clear idea of its strike power.
  • An armada of the movie star's fans occupied the front portion of the auditorium, leaving little room for the blind children, whom the star had come to see.
