artifact (noun) a man-made object of the past and so of historical and cultural interest and importance.

A man-made thing, especially of a fairly ancient past, and can tell us something about the past of the place where it is found, is an artifact. Tools, weapons, pottery, jewelry, etc., found in the excavations by archeologists are examples of artifacts.

  • A huge crate of artifacts picked up at the sites of recent excavations in India was unloaded at the museum a few days ago, and will be on display in a month's time.
  • Artifacts are of immense value in our efforts to understand how the people of the past lived and the devices they used to make their lives comfortable.
