ashen (adj) ash colored; very pale.

When something is the color of ash, that is, the color of the powder to which a burnt thing is reduced, it is ashen. Ashen is very pale. When people are terribly afraid of something, or in deep shock, they turn ashen. That means, they turn very pale, as the ruddy color of blood on their faces fades. If an old building is left unattended for a long time, its walls will appear ashen with some parts of them, green with moss.

  • Very often death is portrayed in stories as a pale ghost, and in movies, as an ashen figure with a human form.
  • Most xerophytes, species of desert plants, are leafless and thorny, and are usually ashen.
