askance (adv) look sideways or through the corners of the eyes.

When you do not look at somebody directly, but sideways or through the corners of your eyes, you look askance at them. By looking askance, you indicate that you doubt what they are saying, that you are studying their words, or that you donít care.

  • As she looked askance at him, he felt she was doubting what he was so seriously saying, so he got irritated, and left in a huff.
  • The man looking askance at her was hardly aware that her husband was looking askance at him. And this amused her very much.
