aspersion (noun) make unpleasant comments and harsh remarks.

If you make unfair comments on others, you cast aspersions on them. If we say we are not happy with the way a person is handling public money, we cast aspersions on their honesty. To comment that a person is not discharging their duty properly is to make them feel that we are casting aspersions against them. To express doubts about a person's character is to cast aspersions on their character.

  • We should avoid casting aspersions on others' character, unless we are sure first of all that they have done something to deserve such aspersions.
  • When the boss told Benny that some of his entries in the accounts have to be rechecked, Benny asked the boss if he was casting aspersions on his honesty.
