assuage (verb) reduce the severity of (an unpleasant feeling or mental suffering).

When you comfort a person feeling insulted or humiliated, and lessen their pain, you assuage their feeling. When you are unable to reduce others' anger with you, you fail to assuage their anger. 'Whatever she did, she was unable to assuage his feeling of distress over the loss of his job.' This means that her best efforts could not reduce his sorrow.

  • Try as Felix might, he was unable to assuage his jealous wife Ann's suspicions of an affair between him and his secretary, Julia.
  • Frank made no attempts to assuage his boss's dissatisfaction with his performance and was happy to be sacked because he never had good relations with the boss.
