assurance (noun) promise; a feeling of self-confidence.

When you make a promise of help to someone, you give them an assurance of your help. A government's statement in public of providing relief to earthquake victims is its assurance of relief. When a person behaves with assurance (also self-assurance), they behave with absolute confidence in their abilities and have a strong hope of success. When an actor performs with assurance they act with confidence and ease.

  • In spite of Fred's assurances that he would partly finance John's venture, John did not approach him because Fred had failed him on an earlier occasion.
  • The assurance, with which he has functioned as the head of operations of a major corporation, reveals his competence and a thorough knowledge of his job.
