astronomical (adj) related to astronomy, the study of stars, planets, and the other heavenly bodies; (of prices and amounts of money) very high, unaffordable.

'Astronomical' means connected with astronomy. Astronomical calculations are calculations of the mass of heavenly bodies, their gravitational forces, the speed at which they move in their orbits, etc.. The appearance of a comet is an event of great importance in our study of heavenly bodies. That is, it is of great astronomical importance. 'Astronomical' as applied to prices or amounts of money means very high; too high for the worth of a thing.

  • Meteoric showers, that is, showers of particles from outer space, hitting the surfaces of planets, are not such a rare astronomical phenomenon as people think, but an interesting phenomenon.
  • In a city like New York one has to pay astronomical prices even for a small piece of land, because of the city's importance as an international trade center.
