asunder (adv) into parts or pieces; apart from each other either in position or in direction.

When something is broken apart or into pieces, it is split asunder. When a party is split into two groups, it is torn asunder or split asunder. When a country is divided, for some reason or the other, it is rent asunder.

  • Pursuing a 'divide and rule' policy, the British left the Indian subcontinent torn asunder as India and Pakistan. As a result of the partition, families were split asunder, the children from their mothers, husbands from their wives, and so on.
  • The issue of the abolition of slavery in the US tore the country asunder into the north and the south, with the north supporting the abolition, and the south opposing it, and it ultimately led to the civil war.
