atrophy (noun) wasting away (of flesh, muscles, and blood).

A disease resulting from the weakening of flesh and muscles in human body due to insufficient flow of blood to the affected part is atrophy. A gradual weakening of a part of the human body, leading to the deadening of the affected part, as in the case of polio, is atrophy.

  • Since the atrophy set in some eight months ago, the fourteen-year-old Tom has been unable to walk, as his muscles waist downward have been atrophied.
  • Victims of atrophy can be helped to become near normal with proper physiotherapy, experts say, if the condition is treated in its early stages.
