attest (verb) to show or prove the truth of; (law) to bear witness; say that something is true and genuine.

When you attest to something, you state that it is a fact. You attest to a person's honesty when you are able to prove that they are honest. You prove the correctness of a person's words, when you attest to them.

  • The number of children who have recovered from the fatal disease as a result of his treatment attests to his competence as a doctor.
  • The goals he has scored in international soccer matches attest to his greatness as a soccer champion.
  • The will left by the deceased was attested by two witnesses, so it is legally enforceable.
