augury (noun) omen; indication of what will happen.
An augury is a happening, a dream, etc., which some of us believe, has some special significance and indicate either good or bad happenings in future. Certain birds like the owl, or the eagle, are supposed by some to indicate evil. So are the appearance of a comet and eclipses supposed to be bad omens, or to indicate evil in future. So, the comet or the eclipses are auguries of evil.
- The speaker at the inaugural function of the organization observed that the sudden cooling of the weather and the rain were good auguries of the success of the company.
- The sudden differences between the two major partners of the organization were not a good augury for the company, some people rightly felt.
