aureole (noun) the bright flame colored and sometimes red light around the sun's disk; halo.

The bright golden yellow and sometimes red light around the sun's disk is the aureole. The aureole is tongues of flame rising to miles' length from the body of the sun. Aureole also means a halo. A halo is the bright red circle we see around the heads of saints or deities in pictures.

  • When it saw the saint's picture, the child wanted to know why around the head of the saint there was the aureole.
  • As the eclipse covered the sun's disk, the aureole looked very clear and bright.
