authenticate (verb) prove that something is true or genuine.

When you authenticate something, you prove that it is true or genuine. When you authenticate a document, for example, you prove that it is written by the person who claims to have written it, and that the contents of the document are true. We authenticate reports, the authorship of books, the writing of letters, etc.. There are occasions when paintings by great masters are authenticated, that is, when it is proved that the paintings are original and not fake.

  • Before buying a painting, supposed to be by a great painter, people usually approach experts to authenticate it, to make sure that they are not cheated.
  • It needs the expertise of specially trained people to authenticate the handwriting and signatures in documents of legal importance, that is, to say whether they are genuine or fake.
