authoritative (adj) expecting obedience to, and respect for authority and rules from people (usually of a regime or of a government).

When a government or a regime is authoritarian, it expects people to obey authority or rules whether fair or unfair, just or unjust. Absolute submission to rules and orders irrespective of their being good or bad is what an authoritarian government demands. Rule by a monarch can be authoritarian. Management by a person who demands that their subordinates follow their commands and rules, fair or unfair, is authoritarian. Schools can be authoritarian if they demand of students a total obedience to rules in the name of discipline.

  • The government of the Republic of China is an authoritarian regime, and the people there do not enjoy total freedom, unlike people in a democracy.
  • Jim as the captain of the team is very authoritarian, and that adversely affects the performance of the team, as his team mates resent his attitude.
