autocratic (adj) dictatorial; having uncontrolled power; expecting total obedience from others.

A dictatorial person is an autocratic person. A ruler who enjoys uncontrolled power is autocratic. Such a ruler is a dictator. A person who imposes their will on others and demands total obedience from them is autocratic. Most military dictators who have seized power in coups have been autocratic. Stalin of the former USSR and Hitler are examples of autocratic rulers.

  • Unless the citizens in a democracy are vigilant, people in power always tend to become autocratic, and exercise unchecked power, because the more the power a person enjoys, the stronger their desire for greater power.
  • If individual liberty is to be safeguarded, democratic forces should always ensure that none assumes unlimited power and turn autocratic.
