autopsy (noun) a doctor's examination of a dead body to find out the cause of death.

When a person dies in suspicious circumstances, a doctor examines the dead body to find out the cause of death. This is autopsy. Also called postmortem, it is usually done when death is not believed to be a normal death, resulting from a disease, old age, etc.. When foul play is suspected, an autopsy is conducted. When a person dies in an accident, or is believed to be murdered, a doctor examines the dead body to establish the cause of death, which helps in finding the murderer.

  • The autopsy has revealed that Kerry Johnson's death was due to a violent hit on his head by a blunt instrument in the early hours of the morning.
  • The police have registered a case of death in suspicious circumstances, and are waiting for the autopsy report to know the cause of the death.
