avalanche (noun) a large mass of moving ice or snow sliding down a mountain side.
Large masses of moving ice, snow, and rock above the permanent snow line on mountains suddenly give way and move down the mountainside, sweeping down anything on its way. This event is known as an avalanche. Its force is irresistible. There have been a large number of mountaineers and those indulging in mountain sports buried under the large masses of ice in their sweep downwards.
