aver (verb) declare that something is true.

To state emphatically that something is true, is to aver that it is true. When you see someone doing something and when you are asked about it, you aver that they have done it. That is, you say strongly that they have done it, because you have been a witness to it. 'Harry averred that he had never seen Jane before.' This means that Harry was emphatic that he had never seen Jane before.

  • Though he averred in the court that he was out of town on the day of the murder, he was not able to prove his absence, so the judge did not accept his words.
  • Given Nelson's record of dishonesty, no one was prepared to believe that he had nothing to do with the misuse of the company's funds.
