awe (noun) a mixed feeling of wonder, respect, and slight fear.

When you are filled with the feelings of wonder, respect, and a little fear for a person or a thing, you are in awe of the person, or of the thing. A grand and massive building impresses you as grand, and evokes your wonder and admiration so it creates awe in you. You gaze at it with awe. If a person with his abilities and talents draws your admiration and respect and causes slight fear in you, they fill you with awe. You speak of the person with awe.

  • Harrison stood speechless with awe as the peaks of the Andes rose before him and appeared as though they were touching the sky.
  • The professor known as a genius in his subject strikes everyone with such awe as keeps them from being close to him. However, he is quite genial and friendly, as some people know only too well.
