babble (verb) speak quickly and excitedly; make a sound like that of water flowing over rocks.

When a person speaks so quickly and excitedly that it is difficult for us to understand them, they babble. When a number of people speak to one another at the same time producing a confused noise, they babble. 'He babbled something and I was unable to make out what he was saying.' This means that I was unable to understand what he was saying because he was talking too fast in his excitement. The stream babbled as it flowed down the hillock - this means that the flow of water made a sound that it usually makes when it flows over stones.

  • John babbled on about the digital camera that his uncle had presented on his birthday, and it took me quite some time for me to make out what he was saying. Only in the end did I understand that he was talking about the camera.
  • Soon after he was declared elected, Perry, in his excitement babbled on something which none around him was able to understand.
