bait (verb) to place a bait (to catch fish or to trap an animal); to provoke a person; to make a person angry.

Bait is the food we place on the hook of the fishing line to draw fish to it and catch them. To bait is to place food on the hook for fish or in a trap to catch animals. To make a person angry by passing insulting comments and offensive remarks about them is to bait them. To bait is more or less to tease or to badger. It is a bit sadistic to bait people, that is, to offend people and make them angry deliberately by making unkind remarks about them.

  • The vigilance men baited Ricky with a lot of money in their attempt to catch him in the act of taking a bribe.
  • The bully that Michael is, he often baits his classmates whom he teases by always making rude or insulting remarks about them.
