bard (noun) a poet.

Bard is another word for a poet. 'Bard' is used usually in literary language. Shakespeare is usually called the Bard of Avon, as he was from the region of the Avon. The bards of the past sang of the adventures of monarchs. That is, the poets of the past wrote poetry praising the adventures of their kings. The Iliad, the great Greek epic, was composed and sung by the bard Homer.

  • Bards of the past enjoyed their Kings' support and patronage as a reward for entertaining and enlightening them with their poetry.
  • Bards are usually men of vision and of a clear insight into human nature, and were regarded as seers. Their poetry is great because it mostly reflects the life styles of their times.
