befuddle (verb) confuse completely and make clear thinking difficult.
When something or somebody befuddles a person, they are completely confused and cannot think clearly. For example, frequent changes in the schedule of flights befuddle passengers. You befuddle others, when you make contradictory statements. 'His words are totally different from his deeds and that befuddles me.' This means that he says one thing and does something else, and that leaves me confused.
- Harry often befuddles others by his kindly behavior now and total indifference the next minute. People just cannot make out his intentions.
- We were totally befuddled when we heard opposite things said about Jane. Some called her sensible and others considered her stupid, with the result we are totally confused.
