beget (verb) become the father of a child; to cause something to happen.
When a man begets a child, he becomes the father of a child. A man begets a son or a daughter, when his wife delivers a child. A man's father begets him, and he, in turn, begets a child, when he becomes a father. To cause the happening of something is also to beget. Love begets love. This means, if we love others, they love us in return and so it grows. In the same way revenge begets revenge. Our taking revenge on others makes them take revenge on us and it goes on and on but never ends.
- It was a great disappointment for Nelson that he could not beget a child in his life. He died pining for children.
- Envy begets hatred. Our intolerance of someone having something we do not have makes us hate them, and envy always causes hatred.
