beholden (adj) indebted; grateful.

When anyone does a favor to you, you feel beholden to them. That is, you feel that you owe them something and that you should return their favor by doing something for them. A person who feels that they have a duty to someone from whom they have received some help or favor, is beholden to them. 'I am beholden to you for the interest you have taken in getting me a job.' This means, I am obliged/indebted/grateful to you for getting me a job.

  • Depending on others’ favors is the last thing Ann likes because she doesn't want to be beholden to anyone. She would rather stay content with what she has than be indebted to others.
  • Jake is really helpful to anyone who needs his help, but the only trouble is, he expects those who receive his help to be beholden to him and express gratitude on every occasion.
