belated (adj) delayed; late in coming or in happening.

If a person arrives late at a place, it is a belated arrival. Greetings which are sent or delivered after the occasion are belated greetings. Whatever is delayed is belated. 'The belated rush of relief to the earthquake victims,' means the sending of relief to the victims very late. Belated medical attention, that is, medical attention delayed may not save the patient.

  • Sam's belated birthday gift to his fiancé reached her a day after the birthday and that proved the start point of the breaking up of the relationship between the two.
  • The belated decision of the General of the army to mount an attack on the enemy resulted in the loss of at least two hundred men on his side. A timely decision could have averted this loss.
