A person is beleaguered when they face many difficulties at the same time and are criticized by everyone. They are attacked on every side and are troubled by every body at the same time. People and problems troubling a person, all at the same time, beleaguer the person. To attack a country from all sides is to beleaguer it. A country surrounded by the enemy forces is beleaguered.

  • Uncooperative colleagues, disobedient subordinates, and a wife threatening to sue for a divorce, beleaguered Frank who feared that as a result of all these, he might go mad.
  • Dissidence from within his party, and strong criticism of his policies from his opponents, beleaguered the leader so much that he thought it would be better to resign from his leadership.
