belittle (verb) make little of others' achievements; talk of someone's achievements as not great.

When someone tries to make your achievements seem less great than they are, they belittle you. When you do not show proper regard for others' achievements, you belittle them. To dismiss something as not worth the praise it is given is to belittle it.

  • As a clever boss, trying to get the best out of every member of his team, Jamison never belittles any of their achievements. On the contrary, he is eager to find occasions to praise them even for their little accomplishments.
  • Belittling your wife in others' presence is certainly not the best way to having a happy family. In fact, praising even the little good that she does, makes for a harmonious family.
