bemoan (verb) lament; complain of dissatisfaction.

When a member of a family is dead, the other members of the family experience deep sorrow and cry over it. That is, they bemoan the death. A father may bemoan his daughter's elopement with a young man whom he does not approve of. That is, he may be very sad about it. Bemoan also means to express dissatisfaction or to complain about something you are not happy about. When you are not satisfiedwith the arrangements for your stay at some place, you bemoan the lack of proper facilities. People nowadays bemoan the general lack of honesty and uprightness in society. That is, they are unhappy about the lack of honesty in society. We find educationists bemoaning the falling standards in education. That is, they are disappointed at the fall of educational standards.

  • The whole nation bemoaned the death of President John F. Kennedy, whose bright career as a leader of international caliber was cut short by an assassin's bullet.
  • Though the critics bemoan the lack of artistic values and the fall in histrionic standards in the present day movies, they continue to be big draws and are earning huge profits for their producers.
