Benediction is literally a blessing invoked in the form of a Christian prayer. In ordinary usage (the word is used rarely), it means an event or news which brings us joy or relief from sorrow or distress. Sailors overtaken by a storm welcome the reappearance of the clear blue sky as a benediction, or a blessing bringing them comfort. For one who has starved for days, the sight of food is a benediction.

  • Dropped off the target area from a plane in a parachute, the US soldier, after days of wandering and starvation in the Korean jungles, found the farmer's hut which offered him shelter a real benediction
