berate (verb) scold severely or angrily.

To berate someone is to scold them strongly, rather abusively too. When a landlord does not receive the rent promptly, he may berate the tenant. That is, he may scold them severely or speak to them very angrily. A severe master berates his servant for being insincere. 'Theresa often berates her husband for getting drunk and gambling.' This means that she scolds her husband severely for his waywardness.

  • Jennifer proved the real stepmother to Julia. On some pretext or the other, she would berate Julia who as a result found life at home miserable and asked her father to put her in a boarding school.
  • It is impossible to believe that Nelson berated Jack. Nelson can never be provoked to say even an angry word to anyone, let alone berate them.
