bereavement (noun) loss, by death, of a relative or a close friend.

When there is a death in the family, the surviving members of the family are bereaved. That is, they have lost a member of the family. 'They are mourning of bereavement in the family.' This means that a member of the family is dead, and the other members of the family are in a state of sorrow. No celebration takes place and no ceremony observed in bereavement.
