bestow (verb) to give in public, and sometimes officially, an honor, title, etc..
In recognition of a person's greatness, and in respect of them, they are given titles, honors, awards, etc.. To give such things on such occasions is to bestow the titles, honors, etc., on them. If we honor any person with a title, we bestow the title on them. In Britain, knighthood or the title 'Sir' is bestowed on men for meritorious services.
