bestow (verb) to give in public, and sometimes officially, an honor, title, etc..

In recognition of a person's greatness, and in respect of them, they are given titles, honors, awards, etc.. To give such things on such occasions is to bestow the titles, honors, etc., on them. If we honor any person with a title, we bestow the title on them. In Britain, knighthood or the title 'Sir' is bestowed on men for meritorious services.

  • The Booker award is bestowed on great writers whose writings are considered the best for the year.
  • In the year 1913, the Nobel Prize for Literature was bestowed on the Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, for his collection of verses 'Geetanjali'.
  • Too busy with his business he has no time to bestow attention on his children's studies, so his wife stays at home to look after them.
