bicameral (adj) having two chambers or two main parts.

Usually the legislatures, that is, the lawmaking bodies like the Parliaments in the UK and in India, and the Congress of the US have two parts. The British parliament has the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Senate and the House of Representatives in the US are the two bodies of legislature in the US. Same is the case with the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in India. Such legislatures are called bicameral.

  • A bicameral legislature makes for better lawmaking as it gives a scope for a second study or reconsideration of the laws to be enacted.
  • A bicameral body is a very good system because people of merit who cannot put themselves to the trouble of elections, but at the same time can enhance the lawmaking ability of legislatures, can find place in it.
