bilious (adj) having indigestion; irritable.

Literally a person is bilious when they suffer from a liver disorder. This is supposed to affect their natural behavior. Bilious people, that is, those suffering from liver or bile complaints, feel irritable. So a bilious person is one who is made easily angry and is short-tempered.

  • Higgins, who is usually calm and balanced, becomes highly irritable at times and is impossible to get on with, perhaps because he is bilious on those occasions.
  • Susan becomes short-tempered suddenly and does not care what she is talking, and whom she is talking to, as though she were bilious.
